05.12.10 Sandwiches

with one comment

When my Mom told me we were going to have sandwiches after the burial, I couldn’t imagine being hungry.  I was wrong, we were all starving.  And the sandwiches gave us a reason to gather after the funeral.  We shared stories — and a laugh.

05.07.10 Getting Ready

leave a comment »

I remember talking to my grandparents about death when I was young.  I thought it was kind of cool that they would be able to communicate with me from another world.  My grandpa promised he would be a friendly ghost, and wouldn’t scare me.  That was before I understood the permanence of death.  And the reality of losing a person you love.  And most importantly, what that loss means to the partner who is still living.

05.05.10 Saying Goodbye

I’m slowly making my way through the photos I took of my grandma’s funeral.  I was on auto drive that day and my camera gave me something to do, and also something to hide behind.  Now that it’s getting quiet, I’m starting to process the reality of losing my grandma.  I’m glad I have these pictures.
