06.09.13 Gordon Parks & Burt Glinn

with 2 comments

A recent NYTimes Lens Blog featured the photographic work of Gordon Parks and an essay by Maurice Berger about Joanne Wilson, a truly remarkable woman whose strength in the face of oppression has been, until now, largely unheralded. The post reminded me of the picture below, which I discovered while visiting Elena Glinn. The image captures Gordon Parks, Burt Glinn and Elena–three exceptional and influential individuals in their own right.

Ishmael Sondag on the Sea Point Promenade in Cape Town, South Africa.  This picture was taken in June 2011, about one month before Ishmael disappeared from the streets. Naomi and I believe he gave a false name when arrested for tik and is subsequently lost in the system at Pollsmoor Maximum Security Prison or has returned to his family in Bloemfontein. Commune of Masina in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.

This image was made shortly after Vicky was reunited with her daughter, Prisca, who had been living on the streets.  The reunion was made possible through the efforts of Karibu Kinshasa, a nonprofit located in Kin.
