10.15.12 DRC: Lights Out

with one comment

Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo.  Headlamp series.

The Headlamp Series was created in the home where I stay while working in Kinshasa.  The power goes out regularly in Kin and this does not disrupt daily routines, yet activities and responsibilities are inevitably carried out differently when nearly enveloped in blackness.  The LED lights reveal glimpses of moments, normally public, that seem shrouded in privacy by the dark.

Kinshasa, DRC. 2012.

  1. Your use of light is unique, Sarah. The shadows behind her bowed head are held back by the light. We hope that the light keeps shining and prevents the darkness from enveloping her.
