A photographer’s responsibility to her subjects is the topic of much debate within photographic discourse. Before I began making images of Ishmael and Jabu I asked what I could offer in return. Jabu asked for a business card, prints of the photographs and a small amount of groceries. Ishmael asked for groceries, a business card, prints and help making clothing samples. I feel honored that Ishmael and Jabu chose to share their respective worlds with me over the past two months.

  1. Sarah,

This such a respectful way to support your subjects. I remember when you looked for days for Somalis’ that you took pictures of to give them copies. Your efforts help photographers honorable in their pursuit of truth.

  2. Sarah, These are beautifully designed and unique business cards. Jabu and Ishmael were generous in sharing their worlds with you, and you returned their generosity with giving them what they most needed to continue their artistry. Love, Mom
